Sleep

I'm currently writing this post in bed, and will add it to the website tomorrow when I wake up. It's almost been a week since I've been back home for the holidays, and my sleep schedule is very wack. Fortunately, I've been able to work on the tape quite a bit.

Since my last blog post about two days ago, I've added about ten more videos to the project file, rounding the video up to a little over 2 hours now. I could, in theory, put this on a full T120 tape. But instead, I'm recording in Extended play, giving me a full six hours of tape to use. I did the same when recording adult swim broadcasts, and while the picture is noticeably lower quality, it's still more than watchable, and a decent tradeoff for being able to play six hours worth of videos in the background.

So far, most of my time has been editing episodes together. Most Eddsworld and Smosh videos work perfectly when played back to back. However with series that have shorter episodes, like Red Vs. Blue and The Filthy Frank Show, they end a lot faster than the others. I've decided to edit episodes together, as if they're being aired on TV. The Filthy Frank Show is the easier of the two to do this with, being able to throw a selection of videos together until it equates to about ten minutes worth of video, throw some static in between the videos, add the intro to the start and the outro to the end, and export thst as its own video. With Red Vs. Blue, I've decided to use the original recordings for season one over the remastered ones, and that has its own set of challenges. To keep it simple for now, I just edit two episodes to play back to back, with title cards coming up before both episodes. I feel like these edits will make the videos feel more at home in a faux TV broadcast, and will cut down on having to see a bump every few minutes.

My main goal with this website is to document not only my work with Digital Guillotine, but also any other compilation tapes I might make in the future. I also intend to create tutorials for making your own VHS tapes, from editing and recording to making your own box art and stickers. Hopefully in the coming days I'll update my website more, and add more interesting commentary. If you're reading this before any other blog posts have been added, then thank you for checking out my silly little website.

Other than that, the first draft tape I made during the summer was just a collection of videos downloaded directly from youtube. While this worked, there was still a noticeable downgrade in quality for the flash cartoons, since a lot of the newgrounds videos were reuploaded to youtube in low quality. With this version of the tape, I've been recording the .swf files themselves to get high quality, high fps versions of these cartoons without compression (before being compressed onto a VHS tape recording in EP).

The tape is practically 1/3 complete at this point, I'm personally surprised that I've gotten this much done this fast. I'm probably not going to be working as hard as it gets closer to Christmas, but I can guarantee a finished version before New Years.
